Elise Rose Landry. We have often been taught that "fine art" is something that is hung on a wall. It is not for consumption or physical use, and should never be actively touched. I would argue that we should be able to touch some of it sometimes. An object is no less precious or "fine" simply because it is rendered as touchable. I make objects that only sometimes hang on a wall, but even if they do they can be touched and experienced physically as well as intellectually. As a metalsmith and fiber artist I work with a painter's true love of color. There is a need to work with my hands, particularly in the small, because this is the way my body works best. The "presence of hand" is what makes each piece unique therefore I do not strive for perfection but for excellence. My work reflects an interest in the relationship between two realms of infinity; one is the spiritual infinity emulated by the architecture of cathedrals and Gothic churches, and the other is the physical infinite of outer space. Visual influences come from astronomical images of star clusters, nebulae, chromatic aberrations, and even medieval zodiac drawings. Inspiration is also derived from the forms of rib vaults and arches of medieval churches, stained glass, illuminaries, and liturgical gold work. I hope that you will enjoy the experience of this art in the wearing and the using as well as in the contemplating. ![]()
